Teterboro is one of New Jersey's smallest municipalities by resident population, yet it contains one of the region's most important general-aviation facilities and a busy commercial district. That unusual combination explains why the borough feels far more active during the workday than its residential statistics suggest.
Route 46 crosses the borough, Interstate 80 forms the northern edge, Route 17 is immediately west and the Lincoln Tunnel is roughly ten miles away.
Teterboro Landing brings big-box retail, pet services and a dense cluster of restaurants to the east side of the airport area.
Why Teterboro stands apart: the borough's 61 residents and 39 housing units are only one part of the story. Airport operations, aviation services, Bergen County Technical High School, retail and industrial businesses create a daytime population and economic footprint many times larger than the resident count.
History: a borough built around aviation
Teterboro was incorporated March 26, 1917 from portions of Little Ferry, Moonachie and Lodi Township. It was named for Walter C. Teter, who acquired land here that year.
The first flight from the present airport site took place in 1919, beginning a century-plus aviation story.
Anthony Fokker established operations here, and Teterboro became associated with pioneering pilots, aircraft development and early private airmail service.
The municipality was renamed Bendix Borough in 1937 and returned to the name Teterboro in 1943.
The Port Authority acquired Teterboro Airport, beginning the modern era of regional airport management.
The Aviation Hall of Fame & Museum of New Jersey began preserving the state's aviation and space heritage.
The Port Authority resumed full operating responsibility after the long Pan Am/Johnson Controls lease era.
Teterboro remains the region's premier general-aviation reliever airport and a major employment center.
Aviation-history note: the borough's older aviation stories are real, but should be phrased carefully. Teterboro was a major Fokker base and aircraft were prepared and modified here for famous flights; the strongest current sources do not support treating every aircraft associated with Byrd or Earhart as having been wholly “built in Teterboro.”
Teterboro Airport
Teterboro Airport (TEB/KTEB) is the oldest operating airport in the New York metropolitan region. It is a public-use general-aviation reliever airport serving private, corporate, charter, medical and other non-scheduled aviation.
What travelers should know
Teterboro is not a conventional airline airport with a central passenger terminal. Most travelers arrive and depart through private fixed-base operators (FBOs).
Atlantic Aviation operates at 233 Industrial Avenue; Jet Aviation is at 112 Charles A. Lindbergh Drive; Signature Aviation operates multiple Teterboro terminals, including East, South and West facilities.
The airport also serves time-sensitive medical transportation, including receipt of organs for transplant operations in the region.

Route 46 runs through Teterboro; Interstate 80 borders the north side; Route 17 is immediately west. These roads connect the borough quickly to Hackensack, the Meadowlands and the Lincoln Tunnel corridor.
Teterboro Station is on the Pascack Valley Line near Green Street/Route 46. Service is oriented primarily to weekdays; riders should check the current timetable before traveling.
