Lopatcong today: The township is closely connected with the Phillipsburg area but remains its own municipality, school district and community. Many addresses use Phillipsburg, NJ 08865 even when the property is physically located in Lopatcong Township.
Municipal park redevelopment: The current Lopatcong Pool is closed. A major municipal-park project calls for a new swimming pool, lazy river, splash pad, bath house, four-season pavilion and supporting site improvements. The township's 2026 bid documents call for the pool, bath house and associated parking work to be completed by May 24, 2027. Other park fields and community programming continue to be important township resources.

History & Local Identity

Created in 1851

The municipality was created on March 7, 1851 from portions of Greenwich and Harmony Townships and was originally named Phillipsburg Township.

Phillipsburg Became Separate

The Town of Phillipsburg became an independent municipality in 1861. The remaining township continued as a separate government.

Lopatcong Name — 1863

The township was renamed Lopatcong effective March 18, 1863, taking its name from Lopatcong Creek.

Creek & Landscape

Lopatcong Creek and the surrounding rolling Warren County terrain have long helped define the community's geography and local identity.

Important distinction: Lopatcong is a township, not a borough. The March 18, 1863 date marks the change from the name Phillipsburg Township to Lopatcong Township, not the creation of a borough.
