Town History

Hackettstown was incorporated on March 9, 1853 from portions of Independence Township. The town later exchanged territory with neighboring Mansfield Township during the nineteenth century as local municipal boundaries developed.

How Hackettstown got its name: Local tradition connects the town's name with early settler Samuel Hackett. Before the Hackettstown name took hold, the settlement was associated with names such as Helms' Mills, reflecting its early milling history along the Musconetcong Valley.

Hackettstown grew from an agricultural and milling settlement into a railroad and commercial center. Its historic street pattern, churches, burial grounds, institutional buildings and downtown commercial structures still show the town's nineteenth-century development.
