Green Township was created on December 27, 1824 from portions of Hardwick and Independence townships that remained in Sussex County after Warren County was formed. The township was named for Ephraim Green, who settled near Greendell in 1770.
Over time, communities such as Tranquility, Greendell, Huntsville and Yellow Frame retained their own local identities. Tranquility was earlier known as Kennedytown, while Huntsville traces its name to Judge Abram Hunt and an earlier milling settlement.
