History & Identity
Belleville grew from the colonial settlement known as Second River. The community took the Belleville name in the late eighteenth century and became a separate township in 1839. Its river and water-power setting supported mills, metalworking and other early industries. Belleville also has Revolutionary War associations, and local industrial history includes wire manufactured for Samuel Morse's early experimental telegraph line.
