Vineland is Cumberland County’s largest municipality by population and one of New Jersey’s largest cities by land area. Its size creates an unusual mix: a traditional downtown, suburban neighborhoods, commercial corridors, farms, industrial parks, lakes, woods and open land all within one city.

Charles K. Landis began developing Vineland in 1861 after acquiring roughly 20,000 acres along the railroad between Philadelphia and South Jersey. His planned community promoted agriculture, broad roads, schools and civic institutions while restricting alcohol sales.
Grape growing became central to the community’s identity, and Thomas Bramwell Welch’s “unfermented wine” helped connect Vineland to the early grape-juice industry. Farming, poultry, food processing and glassmaking later became major economic forces. Present-day Vineland was created on July 1, 1952, when Vineland Borough and Landis Township merged into one city.

Vineland became nationally important for scientific and pharmaceutical glass, a specialty still represented by major local manufacturers.
The city remains connected to produce, farming, cold storage, baking and food manufacturing through large employers and family businesses.

Vineland operates a large PreK–12 public school system with elementary, middle, high-school and specialized programs across the city.
Current district schools include Anthony Rossi, Dane Barse, Dr. John Winslow, Dr. William Mennies, Edward Johnstone, Gloria Sabater, Marie Durand, Pauline Petway, Solve D’Ippolito and the Vineland Preschool Program.
Sgt. Dominick Pilla Middle School, Thomas Wallace Middle School and Veterans Memorial Middle School serve the city’s middle grades.
The city’s comprehensive public high school serves grades 9–12, along with district alternative and specialized programming.

Landis Avenue remains Vineland’s civic and historic spine. Its downtown district now includes the 40,000-square-foot Vineland Convention Center at 631 East Landis Avenue, giving the city a flexible venue for conventions, expos, celebrations and community events.

Vineland maintains 18 parks and recreation areas totaling approximately 405 acres, from neighborhood playgrounds to large sports complexes, fishing lakes and nature preserves.
