Lucy the Elephant · Margate City
Margate occupies the southern portion of Absecon Island between Ventnor City and Longport. Its year-round residential neighborhoods expand dramatically in activity during the shore season, when beaches, restaurants, boutiques, marinas and community events become the center of daily life.

Incorporated as South Atlantic City on September 7, 1885; later became Margate City in 1909.
James Lafferty built the Elephant Bazaar that became today's Lucy the Elephant.
Margate operates under a three-member commission form of government.

Margate's guarded beaches are a defining part of the community. Lifeguard protection operates during the main summer season, with selected guarded beaches sometimes continuing after Labor Day when conditions permit.
All badges are $20 beginning June 1, 2026. Preseason regular badges were $10 before May 31.
Guarded bathing beaches generally operate 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. during the staffed season.
Free seasonal tags are available to eligible veterans and active military members; active-duty spouses are also eligible under the city's 2026 policy.
Margate City School District serves local children through grade 8 in two neighborhood schools. Public high school students attend Atlantic City High School through the sending relationship.

A major recreation hub with athletic fields, courts, play areas and community programming.
Margate Recreation operates courts and programs; pickleball courts are currently scheduled daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The city designates locations and rules for water recreation, including specific beaches for sailing and kayak activity.
Built in 1881 by James Lafferty as the Elephant Bazaar, Lucy is a six-story elephant-shaped building and a U.S. National Historic Landmark. The Save Lucy Committee preserves the landmark and offers guided interior tours.
9200 Atlantic Avenue. The grounds and gift shop can be visited without a tour fee; guided tour schedules and admission prices change seasonally.
