Lakehurst is one of Ocean County's smallest boroughs by area, but few New Jersey communities have a larger place in aviation history. From Manchester Village to Lakehurst Borough
Lakehurst's history predates its 1921 incorporation. The community grew first as Manchester Village, benefiting from rail connections, the Pine Barrens setting and resort-era visitors before aviation transformed its identity.

Airships, Hindenburg & Navy Lakehurst
Lakehurst's aviation story extends well beyond a single disaster. Historic Hangar One housed major American rigid airships including the Shenandoah, Los Angeles, Akron and Macon, as well as the Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg. The station became a major center for lighter-than-air operations and later for naval aviation engineering.
Hindenburg — May 6, 1937The 803.8-foot German passenger airship was destroyed by fire while landing at Lakehurst. Thirty-six people died, including passengers, crew members and a civilian ground crew member.
Historic Hangar OneThe enormous hangar is one of Lakehurst's defining aviation structures and once housed virtually every major American rigid airship of the era.

Tours require advance registration, currently at least two weeks before the tour date, and can be affected by military operations, security conditions or weather. Do not attempt to enter the installation without authorization.
Lakehurst Historical Museum
The Lakehurst Historical Museum at 300 Center Street tells the borough's story beyond the naval base. The museum occupies the former St. John's Catholic Church, built in 1874, and includes material related to airships, railroads, the Pine Tree Inn, local life and borough history.
