From Etna to Emerson
The railroad helped establish a local center in what was then part of Washington Township.
The community incorporated on April 8, 1903 under the name Etna, taken from the local railroad station.
The borough was renamed Emerson, honoring American writer and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Expansion of the Oradell Reservoir permanently changed the eastern landscape and removed older farms and homes near the Hackensack River watershed.
Emerson marked its 100th anniversary and Centennial Park was commemorated on Main Street.
Emerson remains a residential Pascack Valley community with a traditional station, strong public schools and extensive municipal recreation.

Ackerman Park's basketball courts have been resurfaced and upgraded.
The school district completed a full playing-surface replacement project at the Junior-Senior High School courts in 2026.
