Deerfield was formed as a precinct on January 19, 1748 and incorporated as a township on February 21, 1798. Its boundaries changed over time, including the creation of Upper Deerfield Township in 1922.
Rosenhayn and Carmel developed as notable agricultural communities in the late nineteenth century, reflecting Cumberland County’s farming and immigrant-settlement history. Agriculture remains part of Deerfield’s identity alongside food processing, trucking, nurseries and local service businesses.
