About Alpha Borough

Alpha is one of Warren County's smallest municipalities by area, but its identity is closely tied to the industrial history of the Delaware River and Lehigh Valley region.

Alpha was incorporated as a borough on June 26, 1911 from portions of Pohatcong Township. The borough is entirely surrounded by Pohatcong Township and sits only a few miles from Phillipsburg and Easton, Pennsylvania.

Its location near Interstate 78, Route 22, Phillipsburg and the Delaware River gives Alpha easy access to both northwestern New Jersey and Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley while retaining a compact neighborhood-oriented character.

Small-town character: Alpha's planning documents emphasize maintaining the borough's established identity while supporting existing neighborhoods, businesses, walkability and community facilities.

Alpha's Cement-Town History

The modern borough grew directly from the Portland cement industry that transformed this part of Warren County during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Before incorporation, the area was associated with names including Bonneville, Whitaker and Vulcanite. Abundant local limestone helped support major cement operations. The community eventually took the name Alpha from the Alpha Portland Cement Company.

Industrial growth brought immigrant workers and new housing to an area that had previously been mostly farmland. The Vulcanite Portland Cement Company and Alpha Portland Cement operations became major employers, helping turn the settlement into a close-knit industrial community. Alpha's early population included families from Hungary and other parts of Europe, and that heritage can still be seen in the history of local churches and neighborhoods.

Less than two years after Alpha became a borough, streetcar service from Phillipsburg was extended into the community and electric street lighting arrived. The borough later celebrated its 50th anniversary with a week-long Golden Jubilee in 1961.

Vulcanite The historic locality name remains part of Alpha's identity and survives in local street names such as Vulcanite Avenue.
Alpha Cement Works The cement industry provided the name and much of the economic foundation for the growing borough.
Immigrant Community Cement-industry jobs attracted European immigrant families whose churches, organizations and traditions shaped early Alpha.

Parks, Recreation & Open Space

Despite its small size, Alpha maintains a surprisingly strong collection of neighborhood parks and recreation land.

Alpha Community Park West Vulcanite Avenue. The borough's largest recreation property, with parkland, fields, walking opportunities and community recreation space.
John Dolak Ballfield / Benke Field Springtown Road and West Vulcanite Avenue area. Long associated with baseball and local recreation.
McKinley Park West Central Avenue. A neighborhood recreation area historically known as Central Ball Park or Circle Field.
Veterans Park / Alpha Memorial Park First Avenue. Community parkland honoring local veterans and serving nearby neighborhoods.
Alpha Parkland East Seventh Avenue fields and open-space area supporting local outdoor recreation.
Community Recreation Baseball, football, soccer and basketball have long been important parts of Alpha's local recreation culture.

Alpha's 2024 Open Space and Recreation Plan identifies approximately 70 acres of borough recreation and open-space properties. Park rules, permitted activities and facility availability can change; check borough information before scheduling organized use.

Food & Drink

Alpha has a compact but useful local dining scene, with neighborhood restaurants that fit naturally within this all-in-one town guide. Listings and dietary-option evidence were reviewed in September 2026.

GF & DF Dietary-Option Guide

Badge standard: NJTGO applies GF or DF badges only when current published information explicitly supports the option. A cuisine that may commonly be adaptable is not enough by itself.

Sharky's Wings & Raw BarGF

The current Alpha menu specifically labels its steak fries and sweet potato fries as gluten free.

DF review

No Alpha restaurant in this guide currently receives a DF badge because NJTGO did not find sufficiently explicit, current dairy-free or vegan documentation to label one confidently.

Allergy & cross-contact caution: A GF badge identifies a documented option only. It does not mean the kitchen is gluten-free or celiac-safe. Shared fryers, grills, utensils and preparation areas can cause cross-contact. Diners with celiac disease, milk allergy or another medical restriction should confirm current ingredients and preparation directly.
