3. Protect Your PrivacyDo not submit Social Security numbers, account information, passwords, private financial information or unnecessary personal details.

Buying, Selling & Scam Safety
- Be cautious with urgency. New Jersey Consumer Affairs warns that pressure to “act immediately” is a common fraud red flag.
- Meet safely. For in-person exchanges, choose a public, well-lit location and avoid inviting unknown buyers or sellers into your home when practical.
- Inspect before paying. Verify the item, condition, ownership and agreed price before completing the transaction.
- Be skeptical of overpayment. Do not accept a check or payment larger than the agreed price and then send the “difference” elsewhere.

- Avoid gift-card or crypto demands. Requests to pay a stranger using gift cards, cryptocurrency or unusual irreversible payment methods are major warning signs.
- Trust the mismatch. Walk away when a story, price, identity, item location or payment request does not make sense.
